REPORT OF MUTHUSWAMY DIKSHITAR’S NOTTU SWARAS WORKSHOP FROM MAY 18Th to 24TH 2014, AT ACADEMY PREMISES, MALLESWARAM, BANGALORE

Poorvi Sangeeth Academy of Malleswaram had organised a workshop on MUTHUSWAMY DISKTHITAR’S NOTTU SWARAS from 18th  May to 24th May 2014,  at the Academy Premises, Malleswaram Bangalore.  The workshop was conducted by Vidushi N. SREEMATHI.

Sri. Hiremagaluru Pradeep, Managing Trustee of the Academy welcomed the workshop participants on the first day and introduced the Artist. Later on Sreemathi took over and taught the Nottu swaras composed by Muthuswamy Dikshitar one after another on all evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 PM from 18th to 24th May 2014.

Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar has composed around 37 songs on various hindu deities all composed in Shankarabharana raga, set to either chaturashra eka or tishra eka tala. Muthuswamy Dikshitar while staying in Madras (then), during the British rule in India, was listening to the music played on the Band by the British Army next door, and was inspired from this music which is in shankarabharana raga-Karnatic,  and in raag Bilaval-Hindustani. By listening to these lilting notes, he composed simple songs on various hindu deities and made it very appealing and simple to learn and sing, especially by the Karnatic Classical students and singers.

In total about 20 such songs were taught by Sreemathi to the participants, who eagerly picked up these songs and also practiced well to give an effective group presentation on the concluding day, 25th May 2014 in the presence of the audience.

Vidushi N. Sreemathi is a renowned Gamaka vachana singer, and has been popularizing this art to the lovers of gamaka singing.  She has rendered her service in Karnataka Govt Information and Publicity department (Karnataka vartha ilaake), during which she has been instrumental in organizing many programs to promote Karnataka government’s activities in the rural areas.  She is also an AIR artist. Simultaneously and after retirement, she has been popularizing gamaka vachana too. This workshop on NOTTU SWARAS was a real treat to the music students.

Vidushi N Sreemathi introduced the songs to the audience before the presentation on the concluding day. She mentioned that even though these songs are very small and in the same raga of Shankarabharana, yet each appears to be different due to its beautiful composition by Muthuswamy Dikshitar. Unfortunately, not many singers popularize these songs in their concerts, she said.

On the concluding day, all the participants were given a certificate and an audio CD containing these songs for their future practice.  All thanked the Academy and Vidushi Sreemathi for organizing such a useful workshop.
