Events of 2016-17

1) 24th April 2016 - 2nd Poorvi Sangeeth Sanje
The students of Karnatic Vocal - Rekha Sridhar, Archana VIjaykumar and Aruna R, trained by their Guru, Vid. Rekha Prasad, rendered a wonderful devaranamas and other krithis. It was very well presented. They were ably accompanied by Vid S Shashidhar on Violin and Vid. G S Ashwathnarayan Rao on Mridanga.
 
2) 2 to 14 May 2016 - First Summer Camp.
POORVI SANGEETH ACADEMY of Malleswaram had recently organised a summer camp for children of age group 5-15 years. This was the first such camp organized by the Academy.

The camp was held from 2nd to 14th May 2016 daily in the mornings between 9.30am & 12.30pm. The response was quite good with about 19 children participating in the same. The topics during the camp was Music, Music & Music with a variety as follows:

• Children songs and shlokas
• Story Telling
• Bhajans
• Tabla
• Songs on Keyboard
• Songs on Guitar
• Folk dance.

The children enjoyed all the days during the camp by learning the songs on vocal and various instruments. Daily they were given snacks during a short break.

On the penultimate day of the camp, ie. 13th May, all of them were taken on a Education tour to Muddenahalli (birth place of Sir. M Visveswaraiah) in a vehicle for half day. Breakfast and Lunch were provided over there to all the children. During this tour they learnt a lot of information about Sir. M VIsweswaraiah, starting from his birth till death with all his achievements and contribution to the society through his engineering skill.

On the last day, ie 14th May, all the children were given certificates as a token of appreciation for their keen ness and enthusiasm in the camp for learning.

Different faculties took various classes which was enjoyed by all of them.

On the whole it was a memorable camp for the children and the organizers.
 
 
3) 14 May 2016 - Sugama Sangeetha by Vid. H N Meera & Party

POORVI SANGEETH ACADEMY of Malleswaram had recently organised a Sugama Sangeetha Vocal concert on Saturday 14th May 2016, at B.P.Indian Public School, 4th Main, Malleswaram, Bangalore-3.

Dr. B R Padmanabha Rao, President of the Academy welcomed the artists and the gathering. He introduced the Main Artist, Vidushi H.N. Meera to the artists. While doing so he mentioned that the artist is not only a Karnatic vocalist but also an accomplished Sugama Sangeetha Singer of repute. She is also an AIR artist. The artists were honoured with bouquets.

The Music performance commenced immediately thereafter. The songs rendered were as follows:
1. “Gajamukhane” of Sripadarayaru in raga hamsadhwani.
2. “yaavudu ee tampu gaali” of Dr. N.S.L.Bhatta.
3. “Mucchu mare illade” of Ku.vem.pu.
4. “Shubhanudi” of Da Ra Bendre.
5. “Yene shukhabhashini” of D V G.
6. “Dasakka dasara maneya” of Kanankadasaru.
7. “Lokada kannige” of Dr. H S V Murthy.
8. “Ninna mangala koladi” of M N Vyasa Rao.
9. “Shravana banthu” of Da Ra Bendre.
10. “Nanna prarthane sadaa” of Da Ra Bendre.
11. “Brindavanake” of Ku vem pu.
12. “Ondirulu kanasinali” of KSN Swamy.
13. “Yelliruve kaanisade” of Dr. NIssar Ahmed.
14. “Kolalanoodi govinda” of pu ti na.
15. “Brindavanadalli ondirulu” of Dr. H S V Murthy.
16. “Om Sachidananda” of Kuvempu.

Sri. M K Krishna, Program Executive of the Academy proposed the vote of thanks. On this occasion the participants of “Poorvi summer camp for children” were given certificates by the Academy president, Dr. B R Padmanabha Rao.

She was ably accompanied by Sri. Nagabhushana Udupa on Keyboard and Sri. M C Srinivas on Tabla.

The function was very well attended by the the members and music lovers, and enjoyed a full 2 hour musical treat and departed for the day with a happy feeling.

 

4) 17th 22nd July and 23rd July 2016 - Workshop on Hindi Bhajans & Hindustani concert by Ubhayagana Vidushi Sangeetha Kalarathna Dr. Guru Shyamala G Bhave.

POORVI SANGEETH ACADEMY of Malleswaram had recently organised a Hindusani Classical Vocal concert on Saturday 23rd July 2016,  at B.P.Indian Public School, 4th Main, Malleswaram, Bangalore-3, by Ubhayagana kalashree Vidushi Dr. Guru Shyamala G Bhave.

Dr. B R Padmanabha Rao, President of the Academy welcomed the artists and the gathering. He introduced the Main Artist, Vidushi Dr. Shyamalaa G Bhave to the artists. In his welcome speech, he mentioned that Smt. Bhave is a very senior artist and is from a very highly placed music traditional family. She has not only excelled in Hindustani, but is also well informed in karnatic music too. He thanked Bhaveji for having come continuously for one week from 17th to 22nd July to conduct Hindi Bhajans workshop.  The artists were  honoured with bouquets by Sri. M K Subba Rao, one of the senior memers of the Academy.

Dr. Shyamalaa G Bhave had conducted a workshop on Hindi Bhajans from 17th to 22nd July 2016 at Poorvi Sangeeth Academy premises daily in the evenings between 6 & 7.30 PM. About 25 participants attended the workshop daily and learnt popular hindi bhajans of Kabirdas, Tulasidas, Surdas, Raidas, Meerabai etc. The tunes for all the bhajans are composed by Dr. Shyamalaa G Bhave. On the last day, ie 23rd July these participants gave a group presentation of a few selected songs before the concert of Bhaveji. All the participants were awarded with a certificate and a audio CD containing the songs learnt in the workshop for future reference.

The Music performance of Shyamalaa Bhaveji commenced immediately thereafter. The songs rendered were as follows:

1.     A bandish composed by Bindadeen Maharaj in Kalyan raag set to teen taal.

2.     A ragamalike “Prathama mani Omkar”, composed by Baiju Bavara set to Jhap taal.

3.     “Gheyi gheyi maajhe vaache” –a Marathi abhang of Sant Tukaram in Bhaatiyaar raag set to abhang teka.

4.     “Mahadeva shambo shivane”- a kannada devotional song composed by B.R.Sheshadri in gunakali raag set to bhajan taal.

5.     A hori composition of Bindadeen Maharaj “Yashoda ke laal khel” in khammaj raag.

6.     Mangala shloka in bhairavi raag – “Vyaso naigam charchayaa”.

She was ably accompanied by Vidwan Vageesh Bhat  on Tabla, Sri Swamy on Tanpura and Smt. Swarnalatha Bhat on taal and vocals.

Smt. Shyamala Bhave aged around 76, rendered the concert in a very neat and excellent style to the delight of the audience.

           Sri. Hiremagaluru Pradeep, Managing Trustee of the Academy proposed the vote of thanks.

The function was very well attended by the the members and music lovers, and enjoyed a full 2 hour musical treat and departed for the day with a happy feeling, only after offering their namaskars.
 
5) 8th Oct 2016 - Saraswathi Pooja

Saraswathi Pooja was performed on Saturday 8th October 2016 at Poorvi Premises. The Pooja commenced exactly at 5PM as scheduled. The priest Sri. Sathyanarayana performed the pooja very methodically with all devotion. Students and Parents started trickling in slowly one by one. The Mangalarathi was performed and immediately thereafter the stage was set with the sound & lighting system.

Karnatic Vocal students trained by their teacher Vid. Rekha Harinath sang a SANCHARI GEETE. This was followed by a Sharada krithi by the other batch of Karnatic Vocal students trained by their teacher Vid. Rekha Prasad. Immediately the sugama sangeetha students trained by their teacher Sri. Hiremagaluru Pradeep took the stage and sang bhajans on Devi for nearly 1 hour. They were accompanied by their teacher on Harmonium and vocal, and Sri. Sharan Kumar Gurjar on Tabla. Incidentally Sharan Kumar is also the Tabla class teacher in the academy.

The parents and students who had assembled for the occasion enjoyed the event thoroughly. They dispersed later after having taken the prasad.

Sri. M K Krishna, the program executive of the Academy did the compering job very well.

 
6) 13th November 2016 - JAGADODHARANA at Malooru.

Poorvi Sangeth Academy in joint association with Jai Srikrishna Charitable Trust of Doddamalooru, organized ‘JAGADODHARANA’, the second outreach musical event at Doddamalooru, Channapattana, on the occasion of Tula-Poornima: the Day when Saint Purandaradasa visited the Aprameya swamy Temple built in the 11th century by the Chola Emperor Rajendra Simha, and sang the famous krithi – “ADESIDALU YASHODE JAGADODHARANA”, which is very popular krithi amongst all Musicians now.

All the participants from Poorvi Sangeeth Academy, Bangalore and a few members arrived sharp at 8:30 am in a bus at the temple. After performing a small pooja to Purandaradasa’s photo, a procession was taken to the program venue singing the Pillari & Sanchari geethe.

After a sumptuous breakfast provided by the Mallooru Brothers (Krishnaprasad and Ramaprasad) to everybody, the program commenced at 10 AM. The participants and the krithis sung were as follows :

1.     Vid. Rekha Harinath (Poorvi’s teacher) with her students viz.,  Medha R, Aadya P Aithal, Adithi & Harini.G,  sang Pillari geethes followed by a very melodious and popular “adesidaleshode jagadodharana” by the Teacher.

2.     This was followed by the next teacher Vid. Rekha Prasad of Poorvi, with her students viz., Ashika, Jayashree Sriram, Kamala Nandakumar, Sailakshmi & Radhika. They presented ‘Gangadhi sakala teerthangalige adika’, ‘Summane dorakuvude’, & ‘ Yenu maadidarenu phalavayya’, in  group and a solo devaranama – ‘Vaidyana naanariye’ by the Teacher.

3.     The next participant was Vid. N Shreemathi (the renowned gamaka vocalist) who sang another Purandaradasa krithi very nicely.

4.     The next item was a dance – KRISHNA LEELEY by Prishitha & Saaksha (Ramprasad’s children) to the recorded music.

5.     The next three varieties was Bhajans by the local Bhajana mandalis as follows:

a.     ‘Baarayya Ranga Baarayya krishna’ by  Bharath Vikas Mahila Bhajana Mandali of Malooru.

b.     ‘Kande kande na krishnanaa’ by Bhuvaneshwari tanda of Channapattana.

c.      ‘Narayana Narayana’ by Jai Sri Krishna Charitable Trust Bhajana Mandali of Malooru. This was very well presented by the group.

6.     The next presentation was by Hindustani Teacher of Poorvi Smt. Sangeetha Bhatkal with her student Kum. Ashika who sang very neatly ‘Venkataramanane baro’, ‘Ragi tandeera bhikshake ragi tandeera’, & ‘Kandena kanasinalli govindana’.

7.     This was followed by the next teacher & Mananging Trustee of Poorvi, Sri. Hiremagaluru Pradeep who along with his co-teacher Smt. Pratibha Nandan, and students viz., Keshava Raju, Arathi, Shreeja & Sushma Desai,  gave a group songs -  ‘Koosana Kandira,  ‘Ambiga naa ninna nambide’, and a solo by Pratibha Nandan ‘Bandanene ranga’. Pradeep on Harmonium gave a good support.

8.     The next group was a Violin group presentation lead by Vid. S Shashidhar (Poorvi’s teacher) with his students Venkataramanan, Shruthi & Aadya Aithal. The krithi was ‘Raara venu gopa baala’. The presentation was very neat & melodious.

9.     Vice president of Poorvi and Vidwan B K Anantharam rendered a very dynamic presentation of 3 devaranamas on his melodious flute, viz, ‘Sakalagraha bala neene’, ‘Adesidaleshode jagadodharana’, and ‘Bhagyada lakshmi baramma’.

10.   The next group was Malooru Sisters, viz., Vedhavalli, Radhamani, Ramamani & Geetha Ramaprasad who sang two krithis of Purandaradasa.

11.   Vid. Dr. B R Padmanabha Rao, the President of Poorvi sang ‘Narayana ninna namada smaraneya’ & ‘Gunavaayithenna bhava roga’ very melodiously.

12.  Vid. Shivakumar Padmanabhan, one of the Trustees of Poorvi sang ‘Aathana paaduve’ & ‘Govinda ninna namave chanda’.

13.  The final item was a Bharatanatya dance by Gopalakrishna of Malooru.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Sri M K Krishna who also compered for the entire program with his usual wits. Sri Krishnaprasad (Prasad brothers) also proposed a vote of thanks on behalf o f Jai Sri Krishna Charitable Trust along with a momento awarding to the Trustees & Teachers of Poorvi.

Vid. Venkatesh Joshiyer on Violin, Vid. G S Nagaraj on Mridanga, and Vid. Raghavendra Hebbar on Tabla gave a good support to the artists.

This was followed by again a sumptuous Lunch of Bisibele bath, Sakkara Pongal, Puliyogare and Curd rice for all which was again provided by Prasad brothers of Malooru and Jai Sri Krishna Charitable Trust.

After thanking each other all the people dispersed to their homes and Bangalore with a promise to return next year again for the event with all possibilities for improvements.

 
7) 4th Dec 2016 - 4th Anniversary of POORVI

Poorvi Sangeth Academy recently celebrated its 4th year anniversary function on Sunday 4th December 2016 at BHUMIKA HALL, M.E.W.S, 17th cross, Between 4th & 6th Main, Malleswaram, Bangalore-55.

The event commenced sharply at 4PM with a Karnatic Classical Vocal by Vidwan Dr. Shivakumar Padmanabhan, one of the Trustees of Poorvi. He sang for a full 1 hour non-stop with his powerful and yet melodious reverberating voice. He opened his concert with a Kannada Raga krithi “Inta Tamasa” composed by Lalgudi Jayaraman set to Adi tala. The next song was a Thyagaraja krithi “Abhista Varada Shree Mahaganapatim” in Hamsadhwani raga set to Adi tala. The next krithi was “Devirame Maa Mavabdi Tanaye” composed by Mysore Vasudevachar in Raga Vasantha set to Adi tala. Purandaradasa’s “Smariso Sarvada Hariya” in raga Hameer kalyani set to adi tala was the next krithi.  Saint Thyagaraja’s “Kalala nerchina” in raga Deepaka set to adi tala was presented next in a very melodious pattern. The next krithi was in Thodi raga of Thyagaraja “Rajuvedale jhootha murare” set to Rupaka tala. Tillana composed by Veene Seshanna in raga behaag set to adi tala brought a very good brisk atmosphere. He concluded his concert with the popular  Purandaradasa krithi “Venkatachalanilayam” in raga sindhu bhairavi set to adi tala. He was ably accompanied by Vid. J K Sridhar on Violin and Vid. S Rajagopal on Mridanga.

Immediately thereafter the Sabha programme commenced with a melodious and bright Invoication by the students of Karnatic Classical Vocal of Poorvi trained by their teacher Vid. Rekha Prasad. The invocatory song was ‘Palise ambe gunagane gowri’ of Narasimha Vittala in raga Nagaswarali set to Adi tala.

The Sabha program was inaugurated with the conventional Lamp Lighting by the distinguished guests on the dais. Dr. B R Padmanabha Rao (President, Poorvi) welcomed the gathering and introduced the Chief Guest, Sri. P Venugopal (Regnl. Dir. ICCR, Bangalore), and the Poorvi Puraskar Recepient and the Main Performer for the evening, Vidushi Sangeeta Katti Kulkarni, the renowned Hindustani Vocalist, Sugama Sangeetha Singer and Play back singer.

Sri. P Umapathi Raju(Chairman, Poorvi) honoured the Chief guest. Vid. B K Anantharam (Vice President- Poorvi), briefed the august audience about the progress of the Academy starting from its inauguration in 2012. He also mentioned about the Academy’s Music classes in Karnatic vocal, Hindustani vocal, Sugama Sangeetha, Violin, Keyboard, Guitar, Tabla and Bharatanatya Dance.

Vid. Sangeeta Katti was honoured with the POORVI PURASKAR 2016, after which the Chief guest, Sri. P Venugopal addressed the gathering. Soon after Sangeeta Katti also spoke about the tough times the artist has to come across in the life to achieve their goal through hard work. She also praised the Academy and wished it to grow further and continue its meritorious activities in the field of Music & Dance.

All the Faculty members of the Academy, viz., Vid. Rekha Prasad, Vid. Rekha Harinath, Vid. S Shashidhar, Pt. Sharan Kumar Hugar, Vid. Sangeeta Bhatkal, Sri. Shivakumar Swamy, Smt. Pratibha Nandan, Sri. Hiremagaluru Pradeep, Smt. Uma Chandrashekar and Sri. C Ramachandran were honoured on the dais by the distinguished guests with a Momento in recognition of their continuous on-going contribution to the Academy as a Faculty Member. Smt. Nivedita Sharma (Faculty for Bharatanatya dance) who could not make it to the function due to health reasons was also given the momento later.

Sri Hiremagaluru Pradeep (Mg. Trustee-Poorvi) proposed the vote of thanks.

The Hindustani vocal concert by Vid. Sangeeta Katti Kulkarni commenced soon with a vilambit teen taal bandish ‘Re biraha’ in raag Bhimpalasi, followed by a druth taal – ‘Rang so ranga milaay’ and madhyalaya teental ‘Bajare apane’.

She then presented a madhyalaya vilambit jhaptal bandish ‘Dheere dheere tu’ and a druth teen tal taraana both in raag ‘behaag’. She then sang a Tumri ‘Koyaliya’  in raag Bhairavai, and concluded with a dasarapada ‘Kayo karunanidhe’ again in raag ‘Bhairavi’.

She was very ably accompanied on the Harmonium by Pt. Umakanth Puranik and Pt. Jagdish Kurdkoti on Tabla.

Sri. M K Krishna, Prog. Exec of Poorvi did the compereing for the entire event very neatly with his usual wits and thought provoking brief talks.

The hall which was packed to the full capacity with a spill over outside, enjoyed the music and the whole event thoroughly and dispersed to their homes with a promise to return for the next forthcoming activities of the Academy.
 
8)  12th Feb 2017 - 3rd Poorvi Sangeeth Sanje
Students of Hindustani Vocal of Poorvi trained by their Guru Vid. Sangeeth Bhatkal rendered a very inspiring vocal concert with various bandish, chota kahayal, bhajan & Dasara pada. The teacher also gave them a very good support on Harmonium, while Raghavendra Hebbar accompanied them on Tabla. Even though the response by the parents and other students was very less, yet the performers gave a wonderful performance with a promise to come back with a bang.
 
9) 12th March 2017 - Jugalbandi concert

Poorvi Sangeth Academy recently organized the Quarterly Music program comprising of a Karnatic-Hindustani Classical Vocal Jugalbandi Music  function on Sunday 12th March 2017 at BHUMIKA HALL, M.E.W.S, 17th cross, Between 4th & 6th Main, Malleswaram, Bangalore-55.

The event commenced sharply at 6PM with a Welcome by the President of the Academy, Dr. B R Padmanabha Rao who gave a brief introduction of the Main Artists of the evening, viz., Vid. Rekha Harinath (Karnatic) & Vid. Sangeeta Bhatkal (Hindustani). He mentioned that they are not only accomplished AIR artists, but also the Faculty Members of Poorvi Sangeeth Academy teaching Karnatic & Hindustani Classical vocal respectively in Poorvi. All the artists on the dais were honoured with a bouquet.

The event commenced immediately thereafter by Vid. Rekha Harniath with a Shloka in Hamsadhwani raga followed by the popular Vatapi ganapathim krithi by Muthuswamy Dikshitar in raga hamsadhwani set to adi tala. This was equally picked up by Vid. Sangeeta Bhatkal in Raag Hamsadhwani –Lagee Lagan pati sakhi sana set to teen taal.

The next number was a ragamalika which was opened by Sangeeta Bhatkal in as follows:

a)     Raag Bhimpalasi followed by Rekha Harinath in Raga Abheri set to adi tala with a composition set by herself.

b)    Raag Bhoopali followed by raga Mohana.

c)     Next was in Raag Malkauns followed by raga Hindola

d)    The final raag was in desh followed by raga desh.

The audience gave a thundering applause since the raga malika was a continuous presentation for nearly an hour.

The next krithi was started by Rekha Harinath – Tamboori meetidava in raga Sindhu bhairavi set to triputa tala in tishra nade, which was similarly followed by Sangeeta Bhatkal in raag bhairavi set to dadra taal.

The next presentation was a tillana / tarana set to bhairavi raag in teen taal composed by Sangeeta Bhatkal and followed by Rekha Harinath.

The final krithi was the popular Bhagyada Lakshmi Baramma in raga madhyamavathi set to adi tala started by Rekha Harinath and immediately followed by Sangeeta Bhatkal in Raag Bibhas set to keherwa taal.

The curtains drew after a wonderful presentation which was spell bound and swept the audience unexpectedly, since they were not prepared to receive such a astounding presentation by the Faculty Members of the Academy, viz. Vid. Rekha Harinath who is teaching Karnatic Classical Vocal, and Vid. Sangeeta Bhatkal who is imparting Hindustani Classical Vocal at the Academy.

They were equally very well supported by Vid. Ganesh Kumar on Violin, Vid. Chetan Murthy on Mridanga, Vid. Rajeshwari Bhat on Harmonium and Vid. Sharan Kumar Hugar on Tabla. Incidentally Sharan Kumar is also a Faculty in the Academy teaching tabla to the students.

Sri. M K Krishna proposed the vote of thanks.
